For Christmas this year I made my mom some vanilla-orange sugar scrub and body butter. I got the idea from none other than Pinterest. I thought about posting this before Christmas as a gift idea for you all, but I didn’t want to ruin the surprise for my mom. Though she has barely even looked at my blog yet, so it wouldn’t have mattered anyway ;). Vanilla-orange is a scent you can use all year round, so it would be a great birthday gift too!
The sugar scrub turned out awesome. The body butter was another story.
Sugar Scrub Recipe:
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 tsp. Honey
1 Cup sugar
1/4 Cup Olive Oil
Zest of 1 orange
1 tsp. from juice from orange
Mix well in a bowl and store in a container of your choice.
For the body butter I improvised a little bit. I didn’t have any essential oil so I decided to try and make my own. I used zest from one orange and about a 1/4 cup of olive oil and let it sit in the window sill for 2 days.
Body Butter Recipe:
8oz coconut oil
1 tsp. Vanilla
1/4 cup of homemade essential oil (zest of 1 orange & 1/4 cup of olive oil)
Mix the coconut oil and vanilla together with an electric mixer. Strain the homemade essential oil through the cheese cloth to catch all of the zest. Continue mixing until smooth…if you can get it smooth. My problem was that the texture resembled egg salad more than a nice smooth body butter. Let me know if you come across any tricks to whip it up. Not only was it a little lumpy, it was also super oily. Not something you would want to leave on your skin. So I marketed it to my mother as an oil treatment that you rub on and leave for a little bit then rinse off.
I found an old box of leftover Christmas cards from a few years ago to make gift tags out of. Old Christmas cards make the best gift tags!
I put the scrub and body butter in mason jars and tied on the gift tags with twine.
